AI mock interview or interview coach: which should you use?

By the Cavenue team · Updated

The short answer

Neither is better for everyone. AI practice wins on repetition: it’s there at any hour, costs little and lets you rehearse the same posting until your answers are sharp. A coach wins on judgement: presence, body language, your career story and negotiation. A friend or mentor is free and honest, but rarely structured. Most people get the most from AI practice for volume and a person for a final check.

When AI practice is the better choice

  • Your interview is days away and you need many rehearsals fast.
  • The interview is in a language that isn’t your first, or you’re interviewing in more than one.
  • You get nervous and want to rehearse out loud with no one watching.

When a coach is worth it

  • You’re going for a senior role, where how you come across matters as much as what you say.
  • You need help with your story: a career change, a gap, or why you’re leaving.
  • You want feedback on presence, voice and body language, or help negotiating an offer.

When to ask a friend or mentor

  • You want a free, honest first impression.
  • They work in your target field and know what its interviewers ask.

How to combine them

  1. Rehearse with AI first: run the posting’s rounds until your report shows no big gaps.

  2. Bring your report to a coach or mentor, and spend the session on what it flagged.

  3. Rehearse again after the session, and once more the day before the real interview.

Questions and answers

Is AI interview practice as good as a coach?

For repetition and for preparing answers to one specific posting, it can be. For presence, body language and career strategy, a person is better. Many people use both.

Can AI mock interviews help with interview nerves?

Practice helps many people: saying your answers out loud a few times makes the real conversation feel familiar. With Cavenue’s voice interviews you can do that alone, at any hour.

Should I practise with AI before meeting a coach?

It’s a good order. AI practice finds the gaps in your answers cheaply, so the coach’s time goes to what really needs a person.
